Senior Automation Engineer – Sunbury (UK)
Role Summary
- Responsible to the Automation Director
- Key contacts include the Engineering team, Production, Quality Assurance, Chief Engineer
- Located in Sunbury-on-Thames (Hybrid optional)
- 40 hours per week (Flexi-time)
Overall Job Purpose
To design, build and commission fully automated production and test machinery
Main Tasks & Responsibilities
- Manage automation projects or sub-systems of larger projects
- Provide technical assistance and guidance to other automation engineers
- Generate design ideas for discussion in design reviews
- Design machines including electromechanical systems such as robots, actuators, conveyors, and electrical test apparatus
- Design electrical and pneumatic control systems and produce schematics and drawings
- Design and develop complex machine control systems and software using Allen Bradley CompactLogix PLCs in Ladder, SFC and Structured Text languages
- Robotic system design and programming using Fanuc and Mitsubishi robots
- Design and develop vision systems for automated measurement, inspection, and control
- Carry out risk assessment on automated equipment and processes
- Design and implement machine safety systems to comply with UKCA (CE) marking requirements including associated documentation for technical files
- Develop designs to produce 3D engineering models and detailed engineering drawings
- Check in-house and subcontracted drawings
- Liaise with suppliers and sub-contractors to source equipment and components
- Assemble and commission automated machines and subsystems
- Produce related process documentation including standard operating procedures, d/pFMEA, BOMs, process flows and control plans
Other Duties
- Attend relevant training and continuous professional development to improve professional skills and keep up to date with the latest developments in machine automation
- Other duties may be requested on occasion in line with the remit of the role and skills of the job holder

Key Skills
- Degree qualified in Mechanical, Electrical or Mechatronic Engineering
- 10 years industrial experience in designing and building bespoke automated machinery
- Experience using 3D CAD software
- Experience in writing software for PLC controls systems in Ladder Logic
- Experience of designing and building electrical and pneumatic control systems
- Experience of machine automation and process improvement
- Ability to produce high quality engineering drawings to BS8888 standard
- Extensive knowledge of machine safety
