Product Support Engineer

Overall Objective:

To provide support on behalf of R&D to other departments including customer service, QA, and MED, to ensure that TDK-Lambda products meet the exceptional standards of quality and performance commensurate with the brand name.

Main responsibilities

What do I need to know / do to be able to deliver this responsibility?

Monitor field returns for TLU products in order to identify actionable patterns and trends

  • Be able to access field return data through both OLAP and SQL to produce actionable analysis
  • Be able to use standard techniques such as Pareto and time series analysis using tools such as Excel and Minitab
  • Understand how to relate the information in the Web RMA database to specific issues and failure modes

Work with the engineering team to implement and qualify product improvements based on field returns

  • Be able to provide feedback to development teams regarding field issues in order to improve future designs
  • Understand the risks both technical and commercial inherent in changing an existing design / product
  • Be able to identify the appropriate level of testing and qualification required to safely implement product changes
  • Be able to write sufficiently detailed reports to support testing and qualification of product changes
  • Be able to raise CSFs with appropriate levels of detail in order to implement product changes
  • Understand the DVT process and work with the DVT team to specify relevant test using the test and evaluation tables
  • Be able to review and approve DVT test reports using the report approval database
  • Understand the PCN process and work with the technical support team to coordinate product changes to customers

Provide support to QA, customer service, and field application engineering teams for detailed root cause analysis of returned units

  • Be able to perform functional tests on power supplies using standard lab equipment such as AC or DC sources, oscilloscopes, DVMs, electronic loads, power analysers, etc.
  • Be able to locate and access relevant product documentation such as data sheets, BoMs, schematics, PCB layouts, etc.
  • Be able to perform component level failure analysis of TLU products
  • Understand common failure mechanisms for electronic components commonly used in power supplies
  • Understand the physical mechanisms such as temperature, humidity, contamination, etc. that impact the lifetime of electronic assemblies
  • Be able to communicate issues in a clear and concise manner with an appropriate level of detail to both team members and management
  • Be able to write clear and concise failure analysis (FA) reports
  • Understand when and where a STOP notice are appropriate and be able to raise STOP notices using PLM
  • Be familiar with principles of risk assessment and be able to support QA dept in preparation of formal assessments as required

Provide support to both manufacturing and MED teams for identifying and resolving production issues

  • Be able to locate and access relevant product documentation such as test specifications
  • Understand common process control terminology such as process capability, throughput, yield, etc.
  • Have a working knowledge of basic manufacturing processes such as reflow soldering, wave soldering, etc.
  • Be able to use simple descriptive statistics such as mean and standard deviation to analyse test data
  • Be able to work as parts of a team to solve problems under time pressure
  • Be able to represent R&D at the daily STOP meeting and coordinate any relevant issues with the appropriate members of the engineering team
  • Be able to review and approve reworks and waivers arising from STOP notices

  • Be able to access procedures and workmanship standards on Lotus Notes
  • Work in a way that follows our procedures and workmanship standards
  • Be able to explain the process of 5S and 5 why and how these help us maintain our quality standards.
  • Work in a way that promotes the concepts of ‘Right First time’ and ‘Continual Improvement’ throughout the department
  • Identify ways to continually improve your own performance or your departments and actively communicate these to your manager
